A Fantastic Holiday Movie: Elf

Movie Poster for Elf (2003)

The holiday season is full of ginger bread making, caroling, and colorful decorations. However, nothing beats sitting by a warm fireplace and watching happy, festive movies with friends and family. An all time classic— one that cannot be skipped—is the movie Elf, a staple in my home.

Elf, which came out in 2003, follows a human named Buddy– played by Will Ferrell– that was raised his whole life amongst elves in Santa’s Workshop. In the film, Buddy discovers he is not really an elf, and takes an adventure to New York City to find his biological father Walter. Unsurprisingly, a man who does not understand social cues and claims to be an elf does not go over well in New York City. A lot of chaos ensues throughout the movie, but all in all there is a happy ending that will leave you in the holiday spirit.

What I found really charming about this movie was how funny it is. This movie manages to make a premise that has the potential to be a little disturbing or sad, absolutely hilarious. From the comedic timing of the cast, to the eccentric actions of Buddy the Elf, everything in this movie captures the fun and lighthearted feelings of the holidays. The setting also contributes to the festivity. Not only did the filmmakers depict popular holiday sites like Rockefeller Center and Macy’s, but the addition of a snowy New York City further conveys the magical feelings of the holidays.

If you have not already watched this popular film, I would highly recommend you get some hot chocolate, some warm blankets, and you snuggle up on the couch with your loved ones to enjoy this movie and get in the holiday spirit. With its unmatched comedy and feelings of cheer, Elf is by far one of the best holiday movies for the season.
