If you’re an astrology fan, you’ve definitely heard about the Western zodiac signs. Whether you’re a two-faced Gemini or a sensitive Cancer, you’ve probably been given an assertion based on your birth month. But what if I told you there was another world beyond your current understanding? One based on your birth year and an animal with its own distinct traits? Well, pack your things and say goodbye to those boring stars! From dragons to pigs, get ready to traverse the great plains to find out which animal rules your year!
But, before we start, let’s unravel how we got here. All this debacle can be attributed to the Heavenly Gate Race. In the faraway lands, a long, long time ago, the Jade Emperor wanted to measure time and honor the animals of the earth. To do this, he held a grand race and encouraged all animals to participate. From clever tricks to genuine effort, everyone rushed to the palace. And accordingly, that’s what began the whole cycle—one based on how early you arrived.
1) Rat (鼠): the quick, the sly, & the clever
If you’re a rat, you’re naturally a leader. Not only are you resourceful and versatile, but you’ll always find a way to achieve your goals. With that, you’re the first to reach the palace. Congratulations!
2) Ox (牛): the strong, the reliable, & the persistent
If you’re an ox, you’re diligent and determined. No matter your age, you’ll always uphold your promises. This earns you second: only after the rat, who took advantage of your generosity.
3) Tiger (虎): the courageous, the adventurous, & the competitive
If you’re a tiger, you’re someone full of energy. While you may not have surpassed the cunning rat or the robust ox, you’re still great at pushing yourself to your limits. And because you challenged yourself, you secured the third spot, a testament to your tenacity.
4) Rabbit (兔): the gentle, the kind, & the elegant
If you’re a rabbit, you’re probably the lucky charm in someone’s life. You might have lost to Tiger, but you’ll forever be recognized as responsible and creative. So, after you hop across the river on those rocky logs, you place fourth.
5) Dragon (龙): the confident, the ambitious, & the intelligent
If you’re a dragon, you must have an outstanding presence to those around you. Similarly, your “rizz” must be over the roof as you majestically float across the beautiful sky. Since you effortlessly catch the emperor’s attention, you place sixth.
6) Snake (蛇): the mischievous, the mysterious, & the wise
Lucky for you, you were quick to jump on the opportunity to be next. While you might not be the Dragon’s son — the rightful owner of sixth place — your actions prove you to be a deep thinker who values luxury. And with that, you’re an intuitive individual.
7) Horse (马): the independent, the energetic, and the carefree
If you’re a horse, you probably love to be around others. You might be caught up in the weeds, but your vibe is always something that positively influences others. This helps you achieve seventh.
8) Goat (羊): the artistic, the compassionate, & the sympathetic
Much like the horse, your kindness and modesty does not go unnoticed. Because the emperor valued your sensitive soul, you follow the busy horse and take eighth place.
9) Monkey (猴): the witty, the playful, & the curious
If you’re a Monkey, you’re full of tricks. Whether you’re swinging on those dangling vines or climbing those hanging branches, you love to have a good time. Unfortunately, unlike others, you fell behind. However, your swift abilities allowed you to catch up, snatching the ninth spot.
10) Rooster (鸡): the honest, the observant, & the organized
If you’re a rooster, you might enjoy being in the spotlight. Although you place tenth, your efforts in finding a raft for the Monkey and Goat is commendable.
11) Dog (狗): the loyal, the protective, & the prudent
A man’s best friend. While you were a great swimmer, you carelessly spent time playing in the water. You might be reliable, but your playful nature will cost you a higher rank. Better luck next time!
12) Pig (猪): the sincere, the optimistic, & the easygoing
Last but not least, if this is your sign, then you must enjoy the small things in life. As you took your time eating and napping, you still managed to get a spot in the zodiac. Who would have thought!
And that my friends, closes our tight Heavenly Gate Race. So, the next time you’re sitting at the dinner table, staring endlessly at the walls, perhaps you can be the conversation starter and talk about this Chinese mythology. Whether you’re an astrology enthusiast or a casual reader, remember to embrace your zodiac animal and know that the rankings don’t define who you are!
